Merwin Reservoir is in southwest
Washington and is part of the Lewis River system. also known as Lake
Merwin, this popular body of water is home to huge Kokanee and Tiger
Musky and Tiger Muskie. Tiger Musky use were planted about five years ago in an
attempt to rid lake Merwin of squawfish. Merwin Reservoir is a very
popular Kokanee fishery because they often grow quite large. Kokanee at
Lake Merwin often run over 14 inches and as large as 21 inches or more.
There is a large campground on Lake Merwin. it has RV
hookups and tent camping sites. There are also resort facilities
and day use areas. Local fishing guides offer services for fishing
on Lake Merwin. the limit for Kokanee on Lake Merwin is five per day.

Merwin fishing event lures special kids
VANCOUVER - Children with disabilities will have a
chance to reel in a lunker during a special fishing
event July 14 at Merwin Fish Hatchery east of
Woodland.
The 14th annual Merwin Special Kids Day, expected to
draw more than 100 participants and their families,
is sponsored by the Washington Department of Fish
and Wildlife, Pacific Power, GoPAW and PacifiCorp
Energy.
The wheelchair-accessible hatchery waters will be
planted with up to 3,000 trout ranging in size from
one to four pounds. Volunteers will serve as
one-on-one fishing coaches, assisting youngsters
throughout the day.
Rods, reels, tackle and T-shirts will be provided
for the young fishers to use and keep. A free
barbecue lunch will be served, followed by fish
painting, a casting contest and other activities.
Instituted in 1999, the annual fishing event draws
youngsters from the Vancouver School for the Blind,
Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Emanuel Legacy,
Kaiser Kids and Shriners hospitals, but sponsors
encourage anyone with a special-needs child to join
in the fun.
Pre-registration for the event is preferred by July

Merwin Reservoir is big and the water is deep!
Targeting the shoreline is a must and their are
several miles of it! The lake is huge and so are
the tigers! Very serene and beautiful this
sleeping giant offers an awesome get away!
Merwin (Lake) Reservoir (4,090 acres):
This North Fork Lewis River impoundment located
near the town of Ariel, on the south side of
Highway SR-503, is shared by Clark and Cowlitz
counties. The lake is open to fishing
year-round. Kokanee are the main target. Angling
is best in early spring, with fish averaging
12-inches. Tiger muskies were planted in 1995 to
help control pikeminnow populations. There is a
50-inch minimum length and a daily limit of 1 on
tiger musky. PacifiCorp operates boat launches
at Speelyai Bay and Cresap Bay. Call (800)

Merwin Lake (4,089.6 acres) and Merwin Reservoir or
Ariel Dam is found south of state Highway 503 by driving about nine
miles East from Exit 21 off Interstate 5 at Woodland. The huge Lake
Merwin is open to fishing year around. Boat access is at Speelyai Bay
Park at east end. Fishing does not heat up until the water gets warmer.
Kokanee, rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout and Tiger Muskie
may be taken. Trollers do well with leadcore line and thin small lures
like Martin Red Band Radiant 9 Magic and Dick Nite. Raskil, Skiny-Miny,
and Trout teasers are also good lures for fishermen who know how to
catch fish at Lake Merwin. A wide variety of wet flies and nymphs. Baits
or lures for large Kokanee. Fall fishing can be exceptionally good for
surface-schooling fish.
